On the occasion of the Uganda Communication Commission's 10th anniversary, the International Telecommunications Union has credited Uganda with spearheading Africa's communications revolution.
"The telecom sector in Africa is one of the fastest-growing in the world in terms of penetration, and Africa is leading in mobile telephony," said ITU's secretary general Dr. Hamadoun Toure at the anniversary festivities. "These achievements are mainly due to the pioneering work that began 10 years ago in Uganda with the establishment of Uganda Communications Commission [UCC]."
Toure attributed the expansion of the communications sector in Uganda to the government's beneficial policies.
"I am pleased to see that the government of Uganda is playing its part," he said. "The latest achievements in the communications sector are proof that people can conceive, develop and implement sound ICT programs successfully."
Uganda's ICT minister, Dr. Ham-Mukasa Mulira, assured Toure that the government will continue supporting Uganda's communications sector.
"ICT delivers public services in a much more convenient, customer-oriented and cost-effective way," Mulira said. "We're beginning to see a lot of automated processes in government ministries, creating faster ways of planning."
