Kenya ICT board to review certification exam

The Kenya ICT Board has partnered with the Kenya Accountants and Secretaries Education Board (KASNEB) in order to review qualifications for the Certificate of ICT (CICT).

The partnership will enhance the quality of ICT skills in the country, while marketing the CICT for endorsement by the industry, said Al Kags, ICT Board program officer.

"The partnership will begin with a collaborative baseline study to determine the deficiency of ICT skills and type of skills required, and lobby for appropriate legal provisions for the establishment of an institute for the CICT graduates," Kags said.

However, the decision by board to partner with the examination body attracted criticism from Waudo Siganga, chairperson of the Computer Society of Kenya, who wondered whether the board is holding accounts responsible for running the examinations.

"KASNEB does not have the technical capacity to make any ICT Syllabus," said Waudo. "They had to call in a team of ICT experts to write the CICT syllabus."

The KASNEB ICT syllabus is geared toward mid-level technical personnel in the ICT sector, said John Walubengo, a member of the KASNEB ICT Syllabus Board.

"The ICT board has an interest in the ICT technical capacity in this country," he said. "It would be futile to market Kenya as an ICT destination when there are gaps or inadequacies at the college and university level."
